The Senior Threat Manager is a key member of UnitedHealth Group's (UHG) Enterprise Security Resilience Office (ESRO)-Physical Security team and our workplace Threat Management program. The ESRO organization is responsible for the Enterprise Workplace Security Program that facilitates the protection of the company's global workforce and physical assets through security risk management platforms. The Senior Threat Manager will report to the Associate Director, Threat Management within ESRO.

The Senior Threat Manager is responsible for managing a variety of medium- to high-risk, critical, and/or complex workplace violence investigations as part of the larger Threat Management team. This position also plays a key role in supporting the Associate Director, Threat Management in maturing, leading and operationalizing UHG's workplace violence prevention, mitigation and response program. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: safety planning for impacted employees and facilities; participating in the multi-disciplinary, enterprise Threat Assessment Team (TAT)'s response to high-risk cases; acting as a subject matter expert to support the development of workplace violence training; and delivering training and awareness to stakeholders and employees on subjects related to workplace violence prevention and response.

Experience managing end-to-end workplace violence investigations and responding to emergency situations is required. Solid verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to deliver briefings during high-stress and crisis situations, is required. The candidate will need to build and maintain solid internal partnerships with multiple corporate stakeholders at different levels as well as relevant external partners.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • End-to-end management of medium to high-risk, critical and complex workplace violence investigations and critical workplace violence incidents, working collaboratively with key corporate and business partners including but not limited to Employee Relations (ER), Legal, Consumer Affairs, and Communications
  • Develop risk mitigation strategies and nuanced safety plans in response to workplace violence threats and incidents
  • Engage local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as well as on-site security teams to mitigate potential threats of violence as needed
  • Communicate with appropriate stakeholders about safety plans and law enforcement engagement
  • Support the development and refinement of Threat Management standards, SOPs, job aids, methodologies and processes
  • Participate in and at times lead the cross-functional enterprise Threat Assessment Team (TAT) as required
  • Act as a subject matter expert in supporting the development of workplace violence prevention and response training for the enterprise
  • Deliver briefings and training on the Threat Management process and other subjects related to workplace violence prevention and response to a variety of stakeholders
  • Support project management requirements as well as support the Threat Management leader in team administration and strategy development
  • Build and maintain solid relationships with ESRO teams, internal partners, vendors, law enforcement, government agencies, and industry bodies
  • Maintain a solid understanding of Threat Management best practices and emerging industry trends
  • Step in to direct and lead daily Threat Management activities during the Assistant Director's absence or as needed
  • Ability to provide reassurance, empathy, and calm to situations where persons may have heightened levels of fear/anxiety
  • Other job duties as assigned
  • This role requires after-hours on-call availability, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed
  • This position requires a dedication and commitment that may require working past normal business hours as needed
  • This role requires up to 15% travel

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of general security, intelligence, investigations, and/or crisis management experience in the private or public sector
  • 3+ years of direct experience in the field of workplace violence threat and incident management
  • Direct experience in conducting end-to-end workplace violence investigations, developing nuanced risk mitigation strategies and safety plans, conducting in depth interviews, and responding to emergency situations
  • Subject Matter Expert or direct experience in investigating Domestic Violence cases or having experience working with DV victims
  • Demonstrated ability to write thorough, clear, and organized investigative reports superior attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully triage cases and manage multiple investigative cases at one time
  • Direct experience working complex investigations with multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams such as ER, Legal, Insider Risk, Corporate Comms, Exec. Protect, and Risk Intelligence.
  • Proven knowledge of industry best practices for workplace violence prevention, mitigation, and response, including knowledge of violence risk factors and behaviors associated with targeted violence
  • Experience providing verbal briefings in high-stress/crisis situations, and to deliver PowerPoint presentations
  • Proven high level of professionalism, diplomacy, confidentiality, and the ability to interact with a wide range of constituencies across UHG
  • Competency in the Microsoft Office suite of products

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications (Certified Threat Manager or CPP) and/or extensive training and direct involvement in workplace violence investigations and/or behavioral threat assessment
  • Active member of ATAP or ASIS
  • Competency in investigative case management tools and OSINT platforms
  • Experience in working with local, county, state, and federal Law Enforcement agencies in a collaborative manner
  • Proven excellent communicator, including written, oral, and public speaking

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $89,900 to $160,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
