OptumRx CPS team is seeking a Senior AI/ML Engineer to drive the design, development, and deployment of advanced machine learning solutions powering our CPS Optimizer application. As one of the nation's largest providers of pharmacy services to over 800 hospitals and healthcare facilities, CPS leverages data and analytics to help clients address complex challenges in operational efficiency, drug cost containment, regulatory compliance, 340B optimization, and specialty pharmacy strategy. In this role, you'll collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product leaders to build scalable AI/ML models, optimize algorithms, and integrate predictive insights into production-grade systems. You'll play a key role in advancing CPS's proprietary technologies, enabling healthcare organizations to achieve measurable improvements in pharmacy performance, patient outcomes, and cost management through intelligent automation and data-driven decision support.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

Model Development & Deployment

  • Design, develop, and deploy machine learning models and algorithms into production environments
  • Apply deep learning technologies for tasks such as computer vision, NLP, NLU, ASR, and semantic understanding

AI Frameworks & Tools

  • Work with agentic AI frameworks like LangChain and LangGraph
  • Optimize and quantize GenAI models, including those using RAG, Transformers, and VectorDBs

Data Engineering & Analysis

  • Handle large-scale training and inference using platforms like Databricks and PySpark
  • Perform statistical analysis, feature engineering, and dimensionality reduction (e.g., PCA, SVD, UMAP, t-SNE)

Software Engineering Integration

  • Build scalable AI platforms and integrate ML solutions into existing systems using REST APIs, Docker, and cloud services (Azure, AWS)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align AI architecture with business goals

AI Governance & Strategy

  • Participate in AI governance processes including intake, proof-of-concept, and capital planning
  • Break down large initiatives into manageable, cost-effective projects with clear KPIs

Mentorship & Collaboration

  • Mentor junior AI/ML engineers and foster a collaborative, feedback-driven team culture
  • Engage in code reviews, pair programming, and community-based education initiatives

Required Qualifications:

8+ years of total data science/data analytics experience

3+ years of work experience in AI projects with deployment of AI based projects in production

  • Leveraged Agentic AI, and Agentic Frameworks (LangGraph, LangChain)
  • Experience of working with Large Language Models, RAG, Transformers etc
  • Should have a working experience of AI/ML projects deployed in Production.

3+ years of developing sophisticated ML models to create new data samples, patterns, or content based on existing data or inputs

3+ years of working with Azure/AWS services for AI/ML Projects (Databricks, AKS/EKS, ADF, Cognitive Services etc, Logic Apps, Power Automate etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications in AI/ML
  • Experience in high level cloud architecture design for AI/ML projects
  • Experience implementing multiple machine learning and AI techniques such as supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, Deep learning, NLP
  • Proven experience in CI/CD pipelines and tools like GitHub Actions
  • Proficiency with cloud development environments such as Azure Proficiency with experience in ML and NLP
  • Knowledge of Optum AI tools/governance e.g., UAIS (United AI Studio) and MLRB (Machine Learning Review Board)
  • Familiarity with AIML governance, ethics, and responsible AI practices
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure)
  • Proven solid programming skills in Python
  • Proven track record in resolving code vulnerabilities
  • Proven orchestration and management of containers in production environments for AI/ML projects
  • Proven good grasp of using LLMs, Deploying LLMs Proficiency in libraries such as Hugging face and OpenAI API

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $89,900 to $160,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
