Nurse Educator - RN, Part Time, Interim

Samaritan Healthcare is seeking an interim part time Nurse Educator to join our education department. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing organization in a growing community. This interim position will join the current Nurse Educator, and the nurse education team will plan, develop, coordinate and deliver orientation and educational information to nursing across the organization.

We are seeking an individual with labor and delivery experience as this position will initially work closely with the MBU Director, nursing staff, and education department to support the development of several new graduate nurses currently onboarding to this unit.

Specific Accountabilities:

  1. Plans, develops, maintains and conducts general orientation for new members of the nursing staff.
  2. Assists nursing directors as needed in the development of structure and content for unit orientations.
  3. Coordinates and helps teach programs such as ACLS, ACLS-OB, TNCC, NRP, ENPC, and PALS, annually, ensures current evidence based practice is followed as mandated, and associated document is complete.
  4. Plans, develops and conducts nursing skills training, as needed, using a variety of delivery methods, including classroom, one-on-one tutoring, on-the-job mentoring and instruction, self-study materials, on-line resources, and computer-based learning.
  5. Determines need and methods for testing; develops and administers both written and performance tests; and assesses test results to evaluate outcome and skill gaps.
  6. Participates as a member of the PCS Education Taskforce meeting with the Nurse Directors and the QI/Risk Management Director as needed to identify, develop, and deliver education for staff development.
  7. Supports nursing directors as needed in implementing improvement plans for nursing staff members with skill deficiencies.
  8. Plans, develops, coordinates and conducts other nursing and patient related educational programs as assigned. Identifies and evaluates instructional materials in all types of media and formats. Reviews, evaluates, and writes training content, procedures, and assessments.
  9. Estimates, tracks and controls budgetary needs for educational programs within area of responsibility, and monitors costs to determine appropriate registration fees.
  10. Keeps abreast of current nursing practice by observing in each nursing department a minimum of once per month. Also keeps current with internal changes in nursing policies, procedures and practices through review of revised documents and maintaining a reasonable clinical schedule. Collaborates with Informatics, Quality, and other departments as needed to ensure current practice is reflected in education.
  11. Serves as educational consultant to facilities, taskforces, committees, and projects relating to policy, procedure, and program development, and completes associated tasks as assigned. Facilitates/teaches orientation classes for nursing students before their clinical rotations at Samaritan Healthcare.
  12. Facilitates/teaches classes for Pre-Op Joint Replacement patients.
  13. May assist Employee Health in the provision of vaccinations to staff.
  14. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  15. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  16. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  17. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization's values.
  18. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  19. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, by management be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

Required Education & Experience:

  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's Degree in nursing required, Master's degree in nursing or a related field preferred.
  2. Current Washington State Registered Nurse license.
  3. CPR and ACLS/PALS instructor status preferred.
  4. Minimum of 3 years nursing experience within the last 7 years, with a preference for Labor and Delivery experience.
  5. Minimum of 2 years of experience in conducting nursing education preferred.
  6. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (HCP) level to be completed within thirty (30) days of hire.

Competencies:

  1. Demonstrates competent, current, general nursing skills.
  2. Possesses working knowledge of training methodologies and practices, such as adult learning principles, needs analysis, and skills assessment.
  3. Demonstrates competent training skills in a variety of settings, including classroom, one-on-one tutoring, on-the-job mentoring and instruction, etc.
  4. Conceives and structures training programs and develops training materials for classroom and other forms of delivery.
  5. Coordinates educational events efficiently and effectively.
  6. Possesses communication skills (written, spoken and listening).
  7. Demonstrates positive professional interpersonal and customer service skills.
  8. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of software programs, such as Word and PowerPoint, and able to learn and use new software programs.
  9. Organizes workload and manage systems to meet task requirements and deadlines.

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

  1. Occasional or prolonged standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, and pulling.
  2. Manual dexterity, light physical effort, ability to lift/carry up to 40 lbs. (supplies and equipment).
  3. Good reading eyesight and visual acuity; able to see clearly 20 feet or more, to judge distance and space relationships, and to see peripherally.
  4. Requires working inside the hospital facility in offices, patient rooms, and patient care areas.
  5. May have to leave the building to walk to other areas of the hospital grounds in hot or cold weather, or when raining, snowing, and/or in icy conditions.
  6. Requires the ability to read, write, and speak in person and on the phone with patients, family members, the public, and staff.
  7. Must be able to hear in person and on the phone and have full acuity.
  8. Will be working with patients and family members in different patient care areas of the hospital, at which time may be exposed to infections, contagious/bloodborne diseases, body fluids, diseased organs and tissues, and waste material.
  9. Will be in contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances and have occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements (accidents, injuries, illness, odorous chemicals and specimens, hazardous anesthetic agents, a variety of electro-mechanical hazards, etc.).
  10. Will be subject to emergency/crisis situations with patients/families and may be required to perform emergency care. Requires exercise of judgment/action that could result in the death of a patient.
  11. Will be subject to many interruptions, occasional irregular hours, and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
  12. Utilizes universal precautions and any other precautions as indicated, including the use of prescribed personal protective equipment.

This is a part time, 20 hours per week, hourly position with varied hours dependent on the needs of the organization.
