As Principal UX Designer of CX Quality & Prototypes, you will play a pivotal role in elevating the quality and consistency of digital experiences across the Optum portfolio. Reporting to Optum's VP of Product Experiences & Design, you will apply design thinking, craft visually compelling and intuitive interfaces, and build interactive prototypes that bring ideas to life and drive executive alignment. This role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring deep expertise in mobile and web design, prototyping, and scalable design systems.

You'll partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, Design, Research, and Accessibility teams to ensure every digital touchpoint reflects Optum's commitment to innovation, empathy, and excellence. Your work will shape enterprise-wide design standards and influence executive decision-making through compelling, customer-centered experiences. By delivering modern, visually engaging interfaces and solid interaction design across mobile apps and websites, you'll help raise the bar for quality. Additionally, you'll collaborate with the Design System team to define and scale reusable components and patterns that embody the brand's visual identity and drive consistency across the organization.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design Quality Leadership: For priority design programs and projects, do hands-on design work in collaboration with the team and be an advisor to raise the bar on quality in design thinking, as well as visual and interaction design. Establish design quality standards.
  • Drive Strategic Prototyping: Develop and deliver high quality design concepts and interactive prototypes using HTML/CSS/JS that help tell the story of the experience from the perspective of the customer, communicate vision and influence executive decision-making.
  • Scale Design System Innovation: Lead efforts to enhance and scale design quality by partnering with Design System and engineering teams. Define and evolve reusable interaction and visual design patterns that reflect Optum's brand identity, while promoting front-end engineering best practices that enable consistency and efficiency across the enterprise.
  • Champion Consumer-Centered Design Strategy: Align with Product management, Engineering, and Design teams on experience goals, feasibility, and delivery. Advocate for consumer-first design by applying research and behavioral insights to shape intuitive, emotionally resonant experiences that reflect the needs and values of Optum's customers.
  • Enhance Organizational Design Capability: Mentor and coach designers to elevate team skills and design maturity. Lead workshops, design critiques, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of mobile app and web design experience for consumer-focused digital products
  • Extensive design experience and technical knowledge of how to craft scalable design systems
  • Demonstrated success in delivering prototypes and front-end code using HTML/CSS/JS
  • Proven solid foundational understanding of UX design, visual design, brand identity
  • Experience delivering high-quality concepts and prototypes to influence executive-level decisions

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
