As a member of Clinical Excellence team, the Clinical Guidelines Consultant will be responsible for working with the clinical guidelines team to develop high quality, evidence-based guidelines that will be deployed through Optum Health's vast network of clinicians, national care models, and cross-functional technologies. The scope includes research on the most current medical literature, development of guidelines, interfacing cross-functionally with other teams to apply the clinical guidelines and ensure delivery, and working with reporting teams to develop metrics to measure adherence and application of said guidelines. The role requires strong comprehension of current medical literature, strategic thinking, complex problem solving, and analytical skills to drive the development and application of clinical guidelines.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Work with clinicians to develop clinical guidelines:
    • A high level of proficiency in analyzing medical literature
    • Proven skills in synthesis and integration of information from multiple resources
    • A solid understanding of research study design and quality of clinical evidence
  • Strategically prioritize, evaluate, and support the development and maintenance of clinical guidelines in partnership with multidisciplinary internal and external teams
  • Support clinical guidelines medical director team and provide guidance on clinical guideline creation, evidence evaluation, and research
  • Monitor regulatory changes and healthcare trends to ensure timely compliance and innovation
  • Deliver high value and quality across the organization through 'best in class' clinical guidelines
  • Engage in the creation and review of clinical education and training materials
  • Develop and implement clinical workflows and operational enablement
  • Remain up to date on new developments in science, technology, analytics, and business
  • Establish business relationships across teams to build effective feedback processes
  • Collaborate to align goals and strengthen partnerships across key stakeholders
  • Provide support in socializing guidelines and implementing programs
  • Focus on increased transparency and administrative simplification in guideline development
  • Support internal and external communication strategies for new and updated clinical guidelines
  • Coordinate organizational procedures for optimized efficiency and productivity

Required qualifications include:

  • 7+ years of experience in the health care industry
  • 3+ years of progressive leadership responsibility in a medical group or health system, with experience in quality, patient safety, and clinical operations
  • Experience in motivating and influencing others at all levels within the organization
  • Thorough understanding of evidence-based medicine, with experience in critical review of the medical literature and/or medical research publications
  • Proficiency in managing through data, analytics, and reporting
  • Proficiency working in a matrix environment, with demonstrated ability in systems thinking and enterprise insight to solve complex business problems
  • Proven solid critical thinking and analytic skills
  • Proven skills in communicating effectively and efficiently (both verbal and written)
  • Proven solid data analytic skills
  • Proven solid interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, while being adaptable and assisting individuals through the transition
  • Demonstrated ability to provide recommendations and insight regarding improvements to internal and external processes

  • Driver's License and access to a reliable transportation

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Masters in a healthcare related field, advanced business degree, or Certification by a healthcare specific professional entity such as Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE)
  • Quality improvement training or certification
  • Clinical license (RN, NP, LPN, MA), research degree (e.g., PhD or Masters with dissertation), OR academic healthcare experience (publication experience)
  • CPHQ/PMP

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $89,900 to $160,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
