Monitor Technician Extern

The Monitor Technician Extern, under the supervision of a Nurse Educator or Monitor Technician, performs telemetry monitoring and other related technical and clinical activities to support the Monitor Technician Team.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies arrhythmias, deviation in patients' baseline, signs of patient deterioration, and intervenes to ensure patient safety.
  • Reports abnormal heart rhythms and changes in patients' telemetry monitoring to nursing staff, immediate supervisor or designated chain of command.
  • Attaches electrodes to patient's bodies to record electrical impulses from the heart to perform continuous ECG Monitoring.
  • Provides complete and accurate handoff of all patient monitoring and events to oncoming shift.
  • Performs continual and simultaneous surveillance of multiple patient monitors.
  • Identifies and corrects for artifacts.
  • Activates emergency response or rapid response for lethal arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.
  • Completes all required shift documentation and updating of patient's records with all readings taken from the heart monitor or EKGs.

Education and Certification Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • BLS American Heart E-Card (BLS AHA ECARD) - American Heart Association (AMERICAN HEART)
  • BLS American Heart RQI E-Card (BLS AHA-RQI ECARD) - American Heart Association (AMERICAN HEART)
  • BLS Cert American Heart_non ecard (BLS AHA) - American Heart Association (AMERICAN HEART)
  • BLS Certification Grace (BLS GRACE) - Employee Grace Period for Essential Credential (GRACE)
  • BLS Cert Red Cross (BLS RC) - Red Cross (RED CROSS)

Additional Job Information:

  • Complexity of Work: Requires critical thinking skills, effective communications skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Requires sitting for long period of time monitoring and interpreting patients' cardiac rhythms.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Required Work Experience: No prior work experience required.
  • Monitor Tech Extern program successful completion required within 60 days post-graduation.
