Clinical Documentation Educator (CDI)

As the Clinical Documentation Educator (CDI), you will play a key role in advancing clinical documentation excellence by serving as a preceptor and mentor to CDI team members, delivering formal education to both staff and providers, developing impactful learning modules, and conducting audits to ensure accuracy and continuous improvement. This position offers a dynamic opportunity to lead educational initiatives, foster professional growth, and contribute to the overall quality of clinical documentation across the organization.

This is a fully remote position and available if you live in the following states only: AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI & WY. This position is fully remote with travel less than 15% of the time to either a Banner corporate or hospital site. With this remote work, candidates must be self-motivated, possess moderate to strong tech skills and be able to meet daily and weekly productivity metrics. Schedule is Monday through Friday, regular business hours. You are required to work at least 75% of your shift within 7AM to 7PM AZT/MST. No holidays or weekends.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for education and audits surrounding clinical documentation improvement (CDI) staff chart reviews and queries and assists with the development of education and training materials, conducts and coordinates training and development of the CDI staff as appropriate. Creates and conducts documentation related education for providers. This position creates and maintains department training materials, tools, and documents. Participates as a CDI subject matter expert and ICD CM and PCS trainer. Assists with onboarding new hires, conducts new hire skill assessments, department specific orientation and training for work tasks and functions. Provides ongoing, continuing education, and conducts annual competency assessments. Performs concurrent, retrospective, and secondary clinical chart reviews for defined populations to identify opportunities to improve accuracy of provider documentation and resolve DRG discrepancies. Collect, analyze and distribute data and information related to CDI audits and chart reviews. Works collaboratively with CDI leadership to ensure appropriate collection, management and reporting of data.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of the standardized educational efforts of the enterprise clinical documentation improvement initiatives in conjunction with organizational goals and objectives. Develops, maintains, and tracks education and documentation audits. Facilitates tracking mechanisms for CDI education, clinical documentation provider education, CDI audits, and orientation records for staff.
  • Assesses and identifies skills, competencies and areas of learning and instruction needed for all CDI staff. Assists with the development of education and training. This may include preparation and maintenance of related educational materials and development of training programs that will increase the productivity of all employees. Develops, implements, and maintains tools to assess and measure CDI staff against position specific competencies.
  • Provides oversight and participation with the planning and coordination of the orientation programs for new hires; provides introduction to the program, clarifies program expectations and standards; provides prerequisite knowledge required; and assists to train in the basic job skills. Through education, coaching and mentoring builds CDI's comfort in the role from both a clinical perspective and coding knowledge perspective. Provides for ongoing support of staff, and acts as a CDI knowledge resource for staff, providers, leadership teams, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Performs routine audits on charts and clinical queries written by CDI staff to ensure compliance with query guidelines, policies, and CDI workflows. Provides performance feedback to staff on appropriateness and accuracy of queries and provides education, as needed, to correct workflow discrepancies. Tracks and monitors individual and group quality metrics and reports findings to CDI, HIMS, and executive leadership. May also coordinate, perform, or participate in clinically pertinent interdisciplinary chart reviews, ensuring the reviews meet government and regulatory standards.
  • Works in system-wide teams to collaboratively design and develop educational materials and programs to effectively communicate clinical documentation requirements with health care providers. Develops strategic plans for educating health care providers utilizing a variety of teaching/educational methods to ensure successful outcomes. Promotes standardized practices for CDI related provider education throughout the organization.
  • Delivers CDI data insights that help drive strategic and tactical business opportunity and be a champion for a data-driven, decision-making culture. Maintains working knowledge and ability to configure and troubleshoot applications/equipment used in providing data. Assists in staff education regarding data report interpretation. Utilizes data in the most efficient manner and presents data in the most effective and appropriate display for the intended audience.
  • Position is corporate based with no budgetary responsibility. Works independently under general supervision and utilizes analytical and creative thinking skills, and influencing abilities. Provides educational and training expertise towards system-wide clinical documentation improvement efforts, with responsibilities including, but not limited to, all CDI staff and staff assigned to related work teams, as well as physicians and other providers. Internal customers include Clinical Documentation, Health Information Management, and Financial Services Leadership, as well as other members of the integrated healthcare team. External customers: Vendors in the implementation and modification of information/software systems. Regulatory agencies regarding acute care coding guidelines and CDI best practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a level of education as normally obtained through the completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent experience. Requires Registered Nurse (R.N.) license in state worked.

This role will require occasional travel to present/support the Enterprise educational needs for Providers and CDI Staff. Requires a proficiency level typically attained with 5 years acute-care, inpatient hospital clinical experience and 2 years of CDI experience. Must have the ability to work independently, possess demonstrated critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective written and verbal communication skills and time management skills. Must also demonstrate the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team format.

Requires familiarity with AHIMA Guidelines for Compliant Query Practices and the ACDIS Code of Ethics. Requires functional knowledge on the use of computer assisted coding software. Requires strong working knowledge of clinical documentation methodologies as typically obtained through a minimum of two years relevant experience, including solid understanding of DRG methodologies, coding rules, regulations, and guidelines; identification of documentation improvement opportunities; and clarification guidelines.

This role may require occasional travel to support Enterprise initiatives for providers, stakeholders or CDI staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) preferred within 12 months of starting position.

Previous training/teaching experience and coaching/mentoring experience preferred. Knowledge of adult learning principles preferred.

Previous experience with EMRs, CDI/Coding and IT applications preferred. Knowledge/use of Cerner. Certified Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP), Certified Coding (CCS) Specialist, or Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
