As the Clinical Documentation Educator (CDI), you will play a key role in advancing clinical documentation excellence by serving as a preceptor and mentor to CDI team members, delivering formal education to both staff and providers, developing impactful learning modules, and conducting audits to ensure accuracy and continuous improvement. This is a fully remote position and available if you live in the following states only: AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI & WY. This position is fully remote with travel less than 15% of the time to either a Banner corporate or hospital site. With this remote work, candidates must be self-motivated, possess moderate to strong tech skills and be able to meet daily and weekly productivity metrics. Schedule is Monday through Friday, regular business hours. You are required to work at least 75% of your shift within 7AM to 7PM AZT/MST. No holidays or weekends.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for education and audits surrounding clinical documentation improvement (CDI) staff chart reviews and queries and assists with the development of education and training materials, conducts and coordinates training and development of the CDI staff as appropriate. Creates and conducts documentation related education for providers. This position creates and maintains department training materials, tools, and documents. Participates as a CDI subject matter expert and ICD CM and PCS trainer. Assists with onboarding new hires, conducts new hire skill assessments, department specific orientation and training for work tasks and functions. Provides ongoing, continuing education, and conducts annual competency assessments. Performs concurrent, retrospective, and secondary clinical chart reviews for defined populations to identify opportunities to improve accuracy of provider documentation and resolve DRG discrepancies. Collect, analyze and distribute data and information related to CDI audits and chart reviews. Works collaboratively with CDI leadership to ensure appropriate collection, management and reporting of data.
CORE FUNCTIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a level of education as normally obtained through the completion of a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent experience. Requires Registered Nurse (R.N.) license in state worked.
This role will require occasional travel to present/support the Enterprise educational needs for Providers and CDI Staff. Requires a proficiency level typically attained with 5 years acute-care, inpatient hospital clinical experience and 2 years of CDI experience. Must have the ability to work independently, possess demonstrated critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective written and verbal communication skills and time management skills. Must also demonstrate the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team format.
Requires familiarity with AHIMA Guidelines for Compliant Query Practices and the ACDIS Code of Ethics. Requires functional knowledge on the use of computer assisted coding software. Requires strong working knowledge of clinical documentation methodologies as typically obtained through a minimum of two years relevant experience, including solid understanding of DRG methodologies, coding rules, regulations, and guidelines; identification of documentation improvement opportunities; and clarification guidelines.
This role may require occasional travel to support Enterprise initiatives for providers, stakeholders or CDI staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) preferred within 12 months of starting position.
Previous training/teaching experience and coaching/mentoring experience preferred. Knowledge of adult learning principles preferred.
Previous experience with EMRs, CDI/Coding and IT applications preferred. Knowledge/use of Cerner. Certified Documentation Integrity Practitioner (CDIP), Certified Coding (CCS) Specialist, or Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
