Banner Desert Observation Unit

The Banner Desert Medical Center Observation Unit provides a setting of care for patients not requiring an inpatient admission to receive additional diagnostic workup or therapeutic intervention beyond the scope of a typical Emergency Department visit. Our patients primarily are admitted from the ED but will also have patients coming as direct admissions from provider offices for treatment. Patients are projected to need a timeframe of 18 to 24 hours to assess their need for inpatient admission or discharge, therefore we are a fast-paced unit where our nurses can expect to admit, transfer and discharge patients daily. If admitted, this unit also cares for Med/Surg and Tele inpatients, which gives nurses a broader knowledge and skill set and provides the best of both worlds with caring for observation and inpatients.

This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others who are under their direction. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to assess data and plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients. Core functions include assessing patient needs, formulating a plan of care, implementing the plan of care, evaluating the patient's response to care, documenting assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record, providing care based on the best evidence available, interacting with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, and supervising staff and work flow of the department.

Minimum qualifications include a current, valid RN license in state of practice, BLS certification, and experience in the clinical area for which he or she is applying. Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree, professional certification, and additional related education and/or experience.
